FIND THE MISSING MEN (March 2021)

Prostate cancer does not stop for Covid-19. That is why Prostate Cancer UK is alarmed by the latest NHS data showing a sharp fall in men being referred by GPs for diagnostic tests in the last year. Since March 2020, referrals by GPs in England have dropped by around 52,000. It is likely this has happened due to fewer conversations between men and their GP.

Consequently there is an alarming drop in men receiving treatment for prostate cancer – 8,600 fewer men than the year before.  With one man dying every hour from prostate cancer and 40,000 new cases every year, a home testing kit could be the best gift for life ever. Early detection and treatment may vastly increase chances of survival

Help is needed to find these men and help them get a diagnosis before it is too late to be cured. Today, we are asking for your help to find these missing men.

On-Site Prostate Cancer Testing

Covid-19 forced us to cancel previous on-site Prostate Cancer Screening events but as prostate cancer has not been cancelled we are please to announce that we are back to on-site testing on Saturday 22nd October 10.00-14.00 at the Key Centre, The Key, Elvetham Heath, GU51 1HA. We have teamed up with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust to provide both the on-site 22nd October event and also the home testing kits

Our prostate cancer screening process will provide you with your current Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) score and this will be accompanied by a Red, Amber or Green flag and any appropriate recommended next step actions. Although this test is not conclusive, it can be a leading indicator if any further analysis is required. Another benefit of having a PSA test is that it can be used to compare with any previous tests and start to build an overall picture of your PSA ‘velocity’ (the speed of movement of your scores in a given direction).

In our attempt to help combat this disease we wish to provide prostate cancer screening for up to 250 men who register online - free of charge.

For those who are unable to attend on the 22nd October our DIY home testing kits are also still available online, at a 50% discount for local men, that can be completed in the comfort of your own home. For full details see below.

Prostate screening

Testimonial

"At the end of last week I was visited by a neighbour who wished to thank Fleet Lions for their Prostate Cancer Screening Programme.

The test results suggested elevated PSA readings with a recommendation to discuss with his GP, which he did. The outcome was to be monitored and retested in 3 months. At this point the PSA readings had become higher and he was referred immediately to a Consultant. He is now undergoing radiotherapy with a good prognosis.

Given this experience and being the middle male of three in his family, he encouraged both brothers to be tested too. A quite different outcome! His older brother showed completely normal results – but his younger brother's reading was off the scale, resulting in an immediate referral and removal of the prostate. He is recovering, but again prognosis is hopeful of complete recovery.

I was asked to pass grateful thanks to the Lions Clubs who are involved in the testing programme. Clearly testament to a job well done and THANK YOU LIONS!

Recent information in the national press suggests that the introduction of a national screening programme is on the horizon, but I am sure Lions Clubs in the meantime will continue to provide this valuable service."
