Brain Tumour Research

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. There are over 120 different types of brain tumour, and each type needs its own cure. Approximately 16000 people are diagnosed each year with brain tumours and the survival rate is less than 12% surviving beyond five years.

So why not donate to the Lions/Brain Tumour Research Appeal.

In 2019 the Lions Clubs within the UK entered a partnership with Brain Tumour Research and pledged to raise one million pounds for the charity. 20% of money raised will be spent on equipment and 80% will go towards research. One day of research costs approximately £2740.

There are many centres of excellence in this country. The first centre was set up in 2010 with the University of Portsmouth. Other centres of excellence are Plymouth (low grade tumours), Queen Mary London (aggressive tumours), Imperial College London (researching tools and techniques). There is also a virtual tissue bank – Brain UK – which is based in Southampton.

To date, Lions Clubs in the UK have already donated £40,000 for research and £25,000+ for specific equipment. In June 2022 it was reported that we were able to purchase an Automated Pipette Liquid Handling Machine, with match funding, for £58,500.

The original target was to raise the million pounds over four years but then Covid19 happened! The appeal now has no time limit. However, each of the eight Lions districts in the UK have been tasked with raising £10000 each year – an achievable amount.

What can you do to promote the appeal? You could simply donate to the appeal via Fleet Lions ensuring that we are aware it is for Lions/Brain Tumour Research Appeal, or you could plan to hold an event. In the past, schools in our district have done many things to support this appeal such as running a book sale or cake stall, having a raffle, or holding a sponsored 'Wear a Hat' Day ….

By donating via the Lions appeal 100% of the donation will go towards equipment and research funding with nothing being taken off for administration.
